Skyline Community Hub and a rooftop solar array

Skyline Community Hub outfitted with rooftop solar array from repurposed panels

May 2, 2024 News

[Guelph, Ontario – May 2, 2024]

Skyline Community Hub, a shared community organization workspace in Fergus, Ontario, has been outfitted with a new rooftop solar array, using repurposed panels from an industrial property previously owned by Skyline.

The solar panels, which were no longer being used at the industrial property, were only 25% into their lifespan and the Skyline team recognized an opportunity to repurpose them, benefiting both the environment and the greater community.

The 44.8 KW (kilowatt) solar array is expected to result in hydro cost savings for the Hub’s tenants.

Installation was completed at the end of 2023 and involved the efforts of several divisions within Skyline Group of Companies, which also owns the Hub, as well as Elora-based renewable and electrical services company Anvil Crawler, whose team donated their time and resources to install the solar array.

R. Jason AshdownR. Jason Ashdown, Co-Founder & Chief Sustainability Officer, Skyline Group of Companies, sees the initiative as an example of Skyline’s commitment to sustainability.

“We are committed to leveraging our own resources to find innovative ways to give back to the community, and we hope this initiative can influence and inspire other businesses to do the same,” he said.

“This project brought together multiple arms of Skyline, all collaborating to make a positive impact on the service providers in the Hub, and the greater community.”

“This was a win-win situation all around; the solar panels were still able to be used and we saw an opportunity to repurpose them in a way that could benefit some of Skyline’s tenants,” said Rob Stein, President of Skyline Energy, the division that managed the panels’ removal from the previous site and reinstallation at the Hub.

“This is just one example. We will continue to seek new opportunities to create efficiencies and find ways to minimize our environmental impact and enrich our communities.”

Skyline Community Hub, first launched in 2021, is located at 900 Tower Street South in Fergus, Ontario. The 13,000 square foot Hub, which serves hundreds of families each year, is currently home to several community organizations including The Grove Youth Hub, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington, EarlyON Child and Family Centre, and Family Counselling and Support Services for Guelph-Wellington. Skyline invested over $1 million in seed money to develop the Hub in an underutilized retail space.
